Pro-GMO chocolate to the rescue

A new, pro-GMO option for chocolate lovers is now on the market in North America . Launched by a nonprofit coalition of over 1,600 farmers, the new line of chocolate bars tastes good and tells an important story about how GMO farming has saved or could help protect delicious crops ranging from the Hawaiian papaya and Florida orange to the sacred cacao tree itself.

As reflected by one of the four heroic chocolate bars, “The Optimist”, genetic engineering could be used to protect cacao trees from extinction. The cacao tree is currently threatened by changing climates, including warmer temperatures, droughts and pests. And without further efforts to rescue this beloved tree, some reports predict the tree’s extinction by 2050, or much earlier.

Referring to the full line of chocolate bars being offered, lead scientist Rebecca Larson, Ph.D., for A Fresh Look noted: “We want to help educate the public on the value of GMO farming and the positive impact biotechnology can have on a local and global scale, like slashing pesticide use an average of 37 percent worldwide. We want people to enjoy these delicious chocolates, but also take a fresh look at GMOs.”
