Dual-purpose cotton to tackle malnutrition gets FDA approval

Last week the US FDA approved GM cotton for human consumption. Cottonseed is protein-packed but normally contains gossypol, a toxic chemical. The modification eliminates gossypol in the seed but does not affect the cotton fiber, making it a dual-purpose crop that is more sustainable and has the potential to help tackle global malnutrition – just in time for World Food day on 16 October!  Read more
